To get started, spouses will need to inventory their assets and debts with necessary documentation. A history of your tax filing is important. Know the costs of running your household, develop a post-separation agreement, and if you currently have a joint bank account, be sure to open one of your own.

Mediation is often the best way to achieve a successful resolution. It is less expensive, less time consuming, and if both spouses are willing to compromise, mediation produces a positive outcome for the end of a marriage.
